Basic Motivational Interviewing (MI)

This 2 day introductory workshop will cover the principles and spirit of MI; beginning MI skills; recognizing and eliciting change talk; and beginning a plan of change. Participants will apply these skills to their own practice settings.
Advanced MI
Days: 2

This 2 day workshop will be offered as a follow-up for those who have completed the Basic workshop and are interested in practicing and refining their skills. More in-depth demonstration and practice will allow participants to particularly focus on recognizing and eliciting change talk and differentiating it from commitment language.
Combining MI with Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT)

This This 2 day workshop will focus on effective ways to combine MI with cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT).  Participants will learn how to enhance the therapeutic relationship, engage the client in case-conceptualization process, create agendas, set collaborative goals for homework, and increase clients’ intrinsic motivation to apply  CBT outside of therapy sessions.  Skill building and experiential training exercises will be emphasized.  Participants are expected to have at least a basic skill level of both MI and CBT to benefit most from this training.
MI in Supervision

This 2-day workshop will cover how to supervise and support MI skills in the workplace and/or research setting. Participants will learn how to select/hire staff, implement a training and learning plan, and supervise, code and coach the MI skills of staff. Issues in assuring fidelity to the MI model will be covered as well as how to supervise in a motivational style. This workshop assumes some prior training in MI.
MI in Groups
Days: 2

This 2-day workshop will address how to utilize MI skills in group settings. Manualized interventions that have been developed to use MI in this context will also be examined. Participants will review MI skills as well as practice how to use these skills as adapted for group settings.
Using MI with Clients with Co-Occurring Disorders (COD)

"No wrong door” is the preferred approach in COD treatment. This workshop will review principles of COD treatment and how to utilize MI to facilitate client engagement, assessment, and goal setting.
MI in Trauma-Informed Services
Days: 1

This workshop is for those who work in domestic violence, drug treatment, and other settings that wish to provide trauma-informed work. Principles of trauma-informed treatment and their overlap with MI will be covered. Participants will have the opportunity to role play and practice skills.
MI with Offenders

MI is increasingly being adopted and used in various criminal justice settings. We will examine how to use MI in the context of engaging clients while still holding them accountable and fulfilling the tasks of the probation/parole/corrections officer or case manager.
MI with Adolescents

Because MI is a collaborative approach, it is effective in working with adolescents in various settings because it avoids power struggles. We will examine how MI can be used with adolescents in various settings, including substance use disorder treatment and in working with foster youth.
MI with Parents and Families

This workshop will address the use of MI to engage parents in various interventions, particularly those that are court-ordered. We will examine MI’s use across a variety of settings including with parents of young children, substance abusing parents, and parents of adolescents.
Use of MI in Medication Adherence

MI has been found to be particularly effective in the area of medication adherence. We will examine how to use MI in the context of both psychotropic medication adherence for those with co-occurring disorders and for patients in general medical settings.
MI in the Prevention and Reduction of HIV Risk

MI has been utilized in HIV risk prevention, including street outreach as well as clinical settings. We will examine these methods, their research findings, and how MI is applied in the various settings.
MITI Coding 3.0 and Skill Coaching
Days: 2

This training will introduce participants to the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Coding System (MITI), version 3.0. Using presentations, readings, transcripts, audiotape, DVD and group practice, participants will learn to recognize and categorize common elements of practitioner or clinician competence in Motivational Interviewing. Participants for this workshop should have experience in Motivational Interviewing and a desire to learn the MITI 3.0 for supervisory, training or research purposes. This course will include large group exercises and individual or small group coding practice.
